Out of gas

I ignored one of my cardinal rules, and left a city with less than half a tank of gas. I didn’t see a gas station on the way out of Hastings, but figured I’d see one soon enough. Twisted logic, eh?

As you’ve probably guessed from this opening, I ran out. Not to worry: I had about 20oz in reserve, which I poured into the tank when I puttered to a stop in front of a cemetery a couple miles before getting to Battle Creek.

Before that, I was forced to change my route when the road I’d planned turned out to be recently paved. And by “paved” I mean “they poured some tar then covered it with fine gravel, leaving it for the next thousand cars to turn it into a solid surface”. Sorry, but that’s just unsafe for a two-wheeler to ride on.

After refueling upon reaching BC, I stopped at the first credible eatery: Coney Island Cafe & Grill. The parking lot had lots of cars, which is a good sign. Interestingly, the average age of the patrons is about 65. And that’s only because there are a few young parents here too. The expected menu to choose from; I’m having a ranch chicken wrap with fries.

I got here a little after 1, so I’m on schedule. I’m about halfway there, so I should arrive around 5, even if I take more stops (which I intend). Pokagon is almost due south of here, so my route consists mostly of following a few north-south roads as far as they go.
