Case of the missing glove

Friday, 16th July 2010; 10:00 pm - Location:

I left Mackinac Island as originally planned, on the 8pm ferry. When I got to my scooter I had an unpleasant surprise. No, it had not been stolen; I remembered to bring my keys with me this time. One of my gloves had been. Or so it seemed.

I’d left them in the scooter’s glove bucket, of course, as I always do. But there was only one. What a bloody petty prank to pull! I checked with the ferry office, but no one had turned it in.

Reluctant to believe in such… pettiness, I tried retracing my steps. I reversed my ride from the ferry dock to the park at the base of the Bridge, alternating my gaze between the road in front of me where it belonged, with the path I’d taken on the other side. Only a couple blocks of this, I spied something the right size and color by the side of the road. A quick U-turn later, I picked up my left glove. It was a little worse for the wear, with the white highlights now grey.

You see, I had taken a shortcut. Since the ride from the park to the dock was only a few blocks, and I was in a bit of a hurry, I hadn’t put on the gloves. Which made it possible for one to fall out of the glove bucket. It did, and evidently got run over a few times become making its way to the roadside. If only I’d worn them….

And people wonder why I get obsessive sometimes?

Mackinaw

I made it back to Mackinaw City. This is the official start of my ride along Lake Huron, picking up where I left off with the Lake Michigan ride. I’m standing under the Bridge; I’m not going over it this time. 🙂 Which is good because this wind would make me nervous. 🙁
